The New Zealand tertiary education system is broadly divided into six sectors.
Universities
There are eight public universities in New Zealand, which offer undergraduate (bachelor) and postgraduate degrees, besides other short term professional courses. Universities are teaching and research-based and nothing to surprise that five among these were listed in the 2013/2014
Times Higher Education World University Rankings. As per QS World University Rankings 2014/15, University of Auckland ranks 92nd in the world, University of Otago which is NZ’s oldest higher education institute ranks 159th, University of Canterbury located in Christchurch ranks 242nd and Victoria University of Wellington ranks 275th in the world. Massy University though youngest, due to its rapid growth has become New Zealand’s largest and scored 346th rank and other three universities, University of Waikato, Lincoln University and Auckland University of Technology are all ranked among world’s Top 550 institutes.
